University Eye Center
This institution, founded in 1971 by legislative act, is one of scientific eminence and leadership in the profession of optometry. It is a center of excellence in the State University of New York and the only institution of its kind in New York State and in the region. It attracts talented and educated students, interested in optometry and in the health sciences, from many states and foreign countries.
The academic, professional and research programs have a progressive character and they are matched by the quality of a superb faculty. As a major urban campus of SUNY, we have a significant public service mission of clinical care which is of exceptional scope and quality. The professional care which is rendered is integrated into the clinical teaching program and serves thousands of adults and children through the University Eye Center, the College's patient care facility. Moreover, there is an extensive array of clinical satellites and extramural programs which broaden the scope and diversity of the patient population. The size and diversity of the patient population are essential for an outstanding clinical education program in a health profession. The University Eye Center is a unique resource which is unsurpassed in the United States. Finally, a traditional hallmark of the SUNY College of Optometry has been its basic and clinical research conducted by members of its faculty and associated professional staff in the Schnurmacher Institute for Vision Research.
Optometry is a rapidly changing and dynamic health care profession. Doctors of optometry, as primary eye care practitioners, are authorized in their scope of professional responsibility to diagnose and treat diseases of the eye and visual problems and disabilities. The scope of professional care and licensure is congruent with the advances in managed health care. The modern Doctor of Optometry is the primary eye care provider and increasingly is becoming the gatekeeper in eye care problems.
The College is located in the heart of New York City at 33 West 42nd Street, opposite the historic New York Public Library and beautiful Bryant Park. The College's home is a magnificent and gracious edifice that affords students the professional and scientific opportunities that are modern and in a beautiful setting.
New York City presents students with an unparalleled opportunity to grow intellectually and culturally because of the rich resources in the greater metropolitan area. The SUNY College of Optometry is one of the finest institutions of its kind in the nation. We welcome students of talent and promise and invite you to visit and investigate further SUNY's potential in your future.
